Bring the family to The Highground Veterans Park on Saturday, June 24th for Freedom Celebration Day.
There will be a full day of exciting exhibits, food by Hardee’s, bagpipe performance, poetry, a concert by TRISIS and fireworks!
A WWII Living History will be presented near The Highground large vehicle parking area on Ridge Rd. There will be a WWII D-Day theme to the Living History as well as Afrika Corps, motorcycle and sidecar included in the presentation. This Living History will be from 10AM – 6:00PM.
The Learning Center will be open with artist, David Giffey’s, exhibit, “Long Shadow: Memories of Vietnam”. This exhibit consists of large canvas murals based on his personal photographs of Vietnam. David is also the designer of The Highground’s Dove Effigy Mound tribute to POW / MIAs. There is an exhibit showing the design and creation of this tribute in the Learning Center alongside the art exhibit.
Weather permitting, The Highground’s Big Maps of the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf (Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Afghanistan) will be available for veterans and Gold Star families to sign. There will also be an Agent Orange display for Vietnam veterans and families affected by Agent Orange to sign.
Free audioguides are available for visitors to use in touring The Highground at their own pace throughout the day. Hardee’s will have a food tent open from 4pm throughout the rest of the afternoon and evening’s activities.
Hardee’s will have a food tent at the Highground at 5pm. Bagpiper, Gavin Teeter will be playing in the afternoon, followed by poetry at 6:30pm.
From 7pm – 9pm, local vocal harmony act, TRISIS will perform on the Plaza. TRISIS, three sisters from Central Wisconsin, performed at The Highground on Independence Day 2015 and have performed at Big Top Chautauqua and the Capitol Theater in Madison among other venues. They have a fully rounded stage show with genres from vintage classics to contemporary favorites and original compositions.
