The St. Croix Chippewa could have to pay a five-and-a-half-million dollar fine under a proposal issued last week.
Leaders of the Wisconsin tribe are accused of stealing at least one-and-a-half-million dollars from a tribal casino. The National Indian Gaming Commission could have fined the tribe nearly 28-million. The commission has charged the tribe with more than 500 violations of federal and tribal rules. The Chippewa have the option of appealing the fine.
