Although Wisconsin lawmakers agreed to close the Lincoln Hills youth prison two years ago, that has been delayed.
The Joint Finance Committee voted down state funding for replacement youth facilities Wednesday. A spokesman for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections says that means it’s very “unlikely” Lincoln Hills will close its doors in 2021, as planned. The replacement prisons would have been constructed in Milwaukee and Hortonia, but residents living near the second location signed petitions against its placement. The committee did approve six-point-four million dollars for a youth detention center in Dane County.
