Enbridge Energy is proposing a new route for its Line 5 oil pipeline in northern Wisconsin.
Spokeswoman Jennifer Smith says the re-route would loop south of the Bad River Band Reservation and instead pass through the city of Mellen. The Bad River Band filed a lawsuit against the route last July. Smith said after consultation with landowners, communities and regulators, Enbridge feels the new route will minimize impacts to the environment. The company is in the process of buying land from the city of Mellen and is moving forward with the permitting process to help re-route the pipeline. Applications have been filed with the U-S Army Corps of Engineers and Wisconsin D-N-R.
