Authorities in Polk County are charging an Iowa man with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
Investigators say 47-year-old Michael Barkema was drunk when he caused a fatal accident near New Richmond Sunday. The driver of the other vehicle, 54-year-old Dawn Richter of New Richmond, died before she could be taken to a hospital. Barkema and two passengers in his truck escaped injury. He reportedly told deputies he had one beer, but his blood-alcohol level was measured at three-and-a-half times the legal limit.
