One of the two inmates who escaped from the Columbia Correctional Institution in April says the experience was worth it.
Thomas E. Deering made a virtual court appearance Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to a felony escape charge and had three years added to his prison time. Deering apologized to the court but said the experience was worth it because he got to see his first sunrise in 18 years. He and James Newman were free for a day, then taken into custody in northern Illinois.
