Grayce Ann West, age 71, of Hixton, passed away unexpectedly at home on October 5, 2018.
Grayce was born May 2, 1947, in Sturgis, Michigan, to Kathryn and Edward Thomas. Grayce was placed in the foster system after her parents died. At 16 years old, she came to live with her foster mother, Clemmie Helwig, with whom she stayed until she married Gaylin West. She graduated from Black River Falls High School in May of 1965, and then married Gaylin on December 11, 1965, in Hixton, WI. They were married for 53 years and had two children, David and Tanya.
Grayce retired from Black River Memorial Hospital as an OB RN in 2012, at which time she continued teaching CPR until 2016. Before graduating from nursing school in 1987, she worked at Club 95, the hardware store in Hixton, and Gathje’s Greenhouse. She loved shopping, camping, going to the casino, and spending time with friends and family, especially her grandkids.
Grayce is survived by her son David (Amy) West, daughter Tanya (Jeff) Hefty, and grandchildren Anna West, Olivia Hefty, Laura Hefty, Adeline West and Garrett West, all of Hixton, along with step-grandchildren Austin Morales, Asher Morales and Lily Nichols, also all of Hixton. She is also survived by her sister, Grady Gutknecht of Black River Falls; brother/sister-in laws, Ronnie (Jan) West of Black River Falls, and Steven (Ruth) West of Montana, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gaylin West; foster mother, Clemmie Helwig; mother, Kathryn Matthews; father, Edward Thomas; brother-in-law, Gene Gutknecht; mother-in-law, Joyce West and father-in-law, Lyle West.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at the Hixton Legion Hall from 1 – 5 pm, with a brief service. Food and refreshments will be provided. Bring stories and memories to share in the celebration of Grayce’s life.
