(3/21/14) The Badgers overcame a shakey start against American University but finished strong and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.
Wisconsin closed out the first half on a 22 to 5 run and remained dominate the rest of the game outscoring the Eagles 43 to 13. The 75-33 rout was the largest margin of victory ever for Wisconsin in an NCAA tournament game. Trey Jackson led the Badgers with 18 points and Ben Brust added 17 of his own. The Badgers will face Oregon on Saturday.
Darrun Hilliard had 16 points and Villanova pulled away in the second half Thursday night to beat UW-Milwaukee 73-53 Thursday night in the NCAA Tournament. The second-seeded Wildcats outscored the 15th-seeded Panthers 46-30 after the break. Austin Arians scored 17 points to lead Horizon League champion Milwaukee (21-14). Villanova advances in the East Region to face seventh-seeded Connecticut on Saturday.
Three Wisconsin wrestlers continued their push through the championship bracket in Session two of the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City yesterday. Tyler Graff is just one win away from becoming UW's fourth four-time All Amercican. As a team, the Badgers now sit in eighth place in the team standings with 15.5 points. Penn State holds the top spot with 26.5 while Minnesota is tied for second with Oklahoma State at 21.5. Session three of the championships continues this morning at 10am.
Wisconsin senior goaltender Alex Rigsby was named a 2014 CCM Division I Women's Ice Hockey First-Team All-American, the American Hockey Coaches Association announced today at the NCAA Frozen Four Banquet. It marks the second time in her career Rigsby has been honored as an All-American, as last year she earned second-team All-America honors. A native of Delafield, Wisconsin, Rigsby became only the third player in NCAA history to earn 100 career wins last week as she helped the Badgers defeat Harvard, 2-1, to advance to the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four.
In the WIAA Girls State Basketball Championships...Saturday's Division 5 state title game will be a rematch of last year. Defending champion Assumption (26-2) will face undefeated Barneveld (27-0). Both teams had strong victories in the semifinals.
The Division 4 State Championship will feature defending champion Algoma (25-2) and Cuba City (26-1). Algoma will play for its second straight championship as Cuba City will be looking for the school's 10th title.
In this morning's Division 3 semi-finals...Oconto Falls (22-3) battles Kettle Moraine Lutheran (25-1) and Neillsville (26-0) will play Brodhead (25-0).
This afternoon, the Division 2 matchups will be Notre Dame (25-1) vs Pius XI (24-2) and La Crosse Central (21-5) against DeForest (25-1).
Tonight the Division 1 semi-finals will showcase Kimberly (26-0) and Oak Creek (24-2) then Superior (23-3) will take on Mukwonago (20-6).
