An Associate Ho-Chunk Trial Judge has issued an injunction on the Ho-Chunk Legislature, preventing them from encroaching on the Executive Branch of the Ho-Chunk Nation government. An issue arose when the Legislature made a decision regarding a law firm representing the Nation in a lawsuit filed by Spectra, a food and beverage service that provided their services to Ho-Chunk Gaming – Wisconsin Dells. During a January 19th Executive Session, the Legislature had approved funds to hire a law firm to represent the Nation in the lawsuit, but President Marlon WhiteEagle had already hired someone to represent the Nation at that point. The Legislature defended it’s position by saying that they believe they have the power to determine who represents the Nation, as they allocate the funds. An attorney for the President said that the law firm hired by the President has been representing the Nation for several years through a contract, and that the President has never needed to get permission from the Legislature on who represents them in a lawsuit.
