The new Infusion Center at Black River Memorial Hospital (BRMH), is making life easier for a cancer patient.
Peter Kowal lives in Taylor, WI, with his wife, Kelly, and daughters, Janie and Iris. About a year ago, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and began treatment. The battle continues as cancer has metastasized to other organs. One of the challenges Peter faces was the time it took to travel to his chemo appointments. When the Infusion Center opened at BRMH in 2020, Peter decided he wanted to receive his chemotherapy there. “I’m excited to come to BRMH for my chemotherapy,” said Peter, who’s originally from Eau Claire. “I prefer the small-town feel where I’m greeted by friendly faces and I don’t feel like I’m just a number. And I really appreciate getting my care closer to home.”
Along with chemo, each patient receives a chemo-care bag, thanks to a generous donation from the employees of Jackson County Bank. The bags contain such things as warm socks, skin and hair products, lozenges, sleep masks, and other items to help create a relaxing environment. Also, each visit is brightened by a finished coloring page drawn by area youth that is presented to the patient.
