The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has named Diane Perschbacher and Rory Williams the 2026 State Natural Areas Volunteers of the Year for their conservation work at Oshkosh-Larsen Trail Prairies State Natural Area.
The pair have volunteered at the site since 2018 and have contributed to nearly 1,500 hours of volunteer work as stewards.
Their efforts include removing invasive plants, monitoring rare plant species, collecting native seeds, and surveying for bumblebees and butterflies. Their work helps protect the prairie’s native plants and wildlife.
The DNR says Wisconsin’s state natural areas support 90 percent of the state’s rare plant species and 75 percent of its rare wildlife species.
The agency is encouraging more people to get involved. No experience is necessary, and training and equipment are provided. Those interested can find volunteer opportunities through the Wisconsin DNR’s State Natural Areas Volunteer Program webpage.
