Severe weather, including hail and a tornado, hit northern Wisconsin last night, causing property damage. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) urges residents to be cautious when seeking repairs. “Storm chaser” repair crews—often from out of state—may go door-to-door using high-pressure tactics but have a history of poor work or fraud. DATCP advises hiring local, reputable contractors and offers these tips:

Don’t let traveling crews into your home.

Verify crews have local permits.

Get recommendations from trusted sources.

Consult building inspectors and require final inspections before payment.

Always sign a detailed written contract and keep all documentation.

Request lien waivers for every payment.

Wisconsin law protects consumers from insurance-related repair scams. For help or to file complaints, visit ConsumerProtection.wi.gov or call (800) 422-7128.
