Wisconsin is following a national trend of seeing more traffic fatalities, even though there were fewer cars on its roads last year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says even though the coronavirus pandemic had more people working from home, the nation’s car crash fatality rate is up by 7%. A researcher at the U-W-Madison Traffic Operations and Safety Lab says the number of miles driven dropped by 13% last year. Despite that, the state has recorded 166 fatalities in the first five months of 2021 – well above the average for the period.
