Fort McCoy marked the 35th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, in February, with a special History Day and Lunch and Learn event at its History Center. Historian Ward Zischke highlighted the post’s key role in mobilizing more than 18,000 service members and 3,000 pieces of equipment during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Cadets from the Wisconsin Challenge Academy got hands-on experience with 1990s-era military gear, including field phones and uniforms. Zischke said the event was both educational and a chance to honor Fort McCoy’s history supporting U.S. troops during the Gulf War.
