John Carl Sternaman, 86, of Black River Falls, died peacefully at home Tuesday, February 2, surrounded by his family.

He was born to Edward Carl “Dutch” Sternaman & Florence Grace Sternaman on October 2, 1935, in Chicago. John graduated high school from North Park Academy in Chicago, and then attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, where he graduated with a Biology degree. After college, he joined the U.S. Army, and spent the majority of his service stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany. John married Janet Marie Johnson on May 5, 1962, in Oak Park, Illinois.

After his honorable discharge from military service, John returned to Chicago and joined his father in the family’s heating oil / sand & gravel business. In 1978, John and his family relocated to Black River Falls, where he owned Home Oil for several years. That company evolved into Sternaman Oil, which offered heating oil delivery and asphalt paving services to the Black River Falls area.

John never officially retired, but still found time for duck hunting, fishing, and yard work at his home and lake house. He was a devoted family man, and especially enjoyed holidays with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Sternaman, sister Dorothy Zeman, children Andrew, Susan Babcock (Bob Bradovich), Edward, Judith (Patrick) Brauner, and Rebecca Jelinek, grandchildren Michelle (William) Besser, James Babcock, Nathan Babcock, Joseph Sternaman, Thomas Sternaman, Paul Brauner, Mathew Brauner, Stephanie (Issac) Cowles, Kelsey (Tanner) Zoromski, Kaitlyn Noggle, and Justin Jelinek, along with six great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Florence, father Edward, and sisters Elizabeth Brunfeldt and Margaret Holmes.
