John Paul Haug, age 89, of Galesville, passed peacefully in the Gundersen Health
System on Sunday, May 18, 2025. He was born January 2, 1936 to Palmer and Selma
(Schansberg) Haug. He was born and raised on the family farm near Whitehall. He
attended school in Coral City and Whitehall. He graduated from high school in Whitehall
in 1954. For seven years John served in the Army Reserves.
On April 29, 1961, John married Shelbie Ann Lorch. They moved to Galesville where
they built a home and raised two daughters, Susan and Paula.
They enjoyed celebrating 64 wedding anniversaries.
John was skilled in welding, steel fabrication, woodworking and antique restoration. He
was very proud of the 1931 Ford Roadster that he restored and enjoyed driving. John
worked for Whit-Craft House Boat Company in Winona MN for eight years. Later he
worked at Mannstedt and Son, Inc Steel Fabricators and retired at the age of 70. He
was involved as shop foreman and fabricating of steel for many types of buildings and
other items.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Galesville and served in several areas. In
his retirement he enjoyed reading, raising a large vegetable garden and taking care of
flowers and the lawn.
John and Shelbie, along with daughters Susan and Paula, enjoyed traveling to visit
friends and family in many parts of the United States and Canada. John and Shelbie
also enjoyed trips to Branson, MO, Alaska, Hawaii, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.
John enjoyed visiting relatives in Norway. While in Norway they visited the Haug farm
where his ancestors came from in the 1800’s.
He is survived by his wife Shelbie, daughters Susan (Mark) Cassidy and Paula Dostal;
brother Leroy Haug and sister Carolyn Hagen; sisters-in-law Julianne Buttke and Arlene
Lorch; brother-in-law Shyler Lea and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sisters-in-law Lois Haug
and Marilyn Lea; nephew David Haug; niece Sarah Sosalla; brother-in-law Darrel Lorch;
son-in-law Paul Dostal and grandson Jonathan Kundy.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 1pm in the Zion Lutheran
Church in Galesville with visitation from noon until the time of service. A luncheon will
be served after the service. Burial will follow in Old Whitehall Cemetery Whitehall.
