New legislation introduced in the Legislature would ease the penalties for marijuana possession in Wisconsin. Republican state Representative Shaw Sortwell and Democratic state Senator Sylvia Ortiz-Velez are co-sponsors. The bill would reduce the penalty for possessing up to 14 grams of marijuana from a one-thousand-dollar fine and six months in jail to a 100-dollar civil forfeiture. Local governments would be required to enforce fines between 100 and 250-dollars, along with 40 hours of community service. Currently, they are allowed to establish their own penalties.
