A break in a sanitary sewer main has the city asking residents to avoid contact with the water in the La Crosse River. The sewer overflow was reported Saturday shortly after noon. The problem was located on the north bank where the La Crosse River meets the Mississippi near River Side Park. Officials estimate 42-thousand gallons of sewage spilled into the river at that location. The leak has been contained and the city will start work on a permanent fix today (Monday).
