he Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the state’s breeding waterfowl populations remained stable this spring, according to its annual survey of migratory birds.
Surveyors estimated Wisconsin’s 2026 breeding duck population at more than 571,000 birds, up 1% from last year and 28% above the long-term average. Mallard numbers increased 5%, while wood duck populations rose 6% and remain well above average. Blue-winged teal showed one of the biggest gains, climbing 19% from 2025.
The state’s Canada goose population dipped slightly, down 2% from last year, but remains 13% higher than the long-term average.
The DNR says the survey data helps guide waterfowl management decisions in Wisconsin and contributes to the broader North American breeding waterfowl survey.
Waterfowl enthusiasts can also mark their calendars for the Waterfowl Hunters Expo, set for Aug. 21 and 22 at the Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh. The event will feature exhibits, expert presentations, calling contests and the state’s waterfowl, turkey and pheasant stamp competitions.
