Several staff and youth from the Ho-Chunk Nation will be embarking on a “Dugout Canoe Journey” this week. According to a press release from the Ho-Chunk nation, participants will be traveling through the four lakes of Madison as well as the Rock River in Beloit to visit traditional Ho-Chunk sites and waterways engaging them in traditional culture, history, and language. The journey is funded by both the tribe’s gaming revenue and the US Bureau of Indian Education. Dugout canoes are one of the earliest known methods of water surface transportation, dating back about 8,000 years. The trip starts today (6/20) and runs through Friday (6/24).
