Tax Filing Season Starts Monday

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue says the 2026 income tax filing season begins Monday, January 26th. Both the IRS and the state will be accepting and processing 2025 individual income tax returns. Taxpayers have several filing options, including WisTax, the state’s free and secure online filing system, commercial tax software, professional tax preparers, or free help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The Department of Revenue is encouraging people to file electronically. Last year, more than 93 percent of Americans filed online, citing faster refunds, fewer errors, and better protection against identity theft. Electronic returns are processed about a week faster on average. Taxpayers can also track their refund status online using the DOR’s “Where’s My Refund” tool, which provides the same information as the agency’s call center. For more help, customer service numbers are available on the Department of Revenue’s website.
