The U-S-D-A National Agriculture Statistics Service reports that total farmland in Wisconsin has declined for the first time in four years. 14.2 million acres were farmed in 2021 – down 100,000 acres from the year before. The total number of farms fell by 300 to 64,100. Experts say Wisconsin has seen a lot of producers transition out of dairy farming. Bigger operations often buy them out. The number of producers earning a half-million dollars a year or more actually grew by 4% in 2021. And, the average price of farmland sold last year jumped by 11%.
