UW-Madison Experts Worry over Spotted Lanternfly Effect on Orchards and Wineries

(Madison, WI)  —  The head of the insect diagnostic laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison says it is a matter of when a destructive exotic pest arrives in the state – not if.  Manager P-J Liesch tells Wisconsin Public Radio the Spotted lanternfly has been found in a dozen states so far.  The U-S Department of Agriculture says the lanternfly could have a serious impact on grape orchards and the logging industry.  Liesch says it is a challenging pest to deal with and it could definitely cause problems for operators of Wisconsin orchards and wineries.
