William Patrick Leis, of Alma Center, died Friday, November 19th at the age of 70 in Milwaukee from complications following heart surgery.
Bill, as he was known to everyone, was born on March 17, 1951 in Viroqua, Wisconsin to Alfred and Lucille Leis (neÌe Larson). Raised on a dairy farm in Cashton, Wisconsin, he graduated High School in 1969. Following High School he attended college at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse where he played football for the Eagles for four years on the offensive line. Bill graduated with a degree in Physical Education and Health in 1974, later going back to get his Master’s degree.
Bill’s first job after graduating college was for the School District of Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan where he taught Phy Ed. and Health for 34 years until his retirement in 2008. 1974 proved to be a big year for Bill as it was also the year that he met his future wife Kathy (neÌe Michels) while playing softball for Club 95 where she was a waitress at the time. Bill and Kathy married in 1976. During their 45 years of marriage they raised 4 children and also became grandparents to two.
When Bill wasn’t filling his time being a loving and devoted husband, father, and “Papa” he could be found enjoying life through a number of different activities. He loved to play golf as much as anyone – for more than 25 years you could find him every Thursday at Skyline in Black River Falls, and there was rarely an invitation to any tee time that he would turn down. Beyond the golf course, you could often find Bill in the woods hunting, or on the lake fishing, and you could count on one hand the number of card games Bill turned down over the years. Throughout his teaching career he also devoted time to coaching football, basketball, and track at various points, and he was an active member of the Alma Center Lion’s Club for more than 45 years.
Bill is survived by his wife Kathy; children Jennifer, Megan (Michael) Stary, Ryan, and Timothy; grandchildren Deklan, and Lakyn; brothers Dennis (Barb) and Frank (Gloria); and sister Mary Furman. He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Lucille Leis, stepmother Colletta, and brother Dave.
