The Wisconsin Department of Justice is joining a multistate settlement with Labcorp over a 2019 data breach involving the company’s debt collector, American Medical Collection Agency.
The breach potentially exposed personal information belonging to more than 27-and-a-half million people nationwide, including about 10-point-2 million Labcorp patients. In Wisconsin, more than 16-thousand residents were affected.
Labcorp will pay nearly 2-point-3 million dollars to the states, with about 17-thousand-500 dollars going to Wisconsin.
The settlement also requires Labcorp to strengthen its vendor security practices, including monitoring vendors, limiting the information shared with them, and conducting additional cybersecurity assessments.
