The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is encouraging residents to think about the importance of groundwater during Groundwater Awareness Week, March 8th through the 14th.

Officials say about two-thirds of Wisconsin residents rely on groundwater for drinking water, and it also supports major industries like tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing.

The DNR says protecting groundwater starts with simple steps at home, including conserving water, reducing chemical use, and properly disposing of household hazardous waste.

Private well owners are also encouraged to test their water regularly, especially for bacteria and nitrates each year.

State officials say awareness and conservation are key to protecting Wisconsin’s groundwater for future generations.
