The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin are celebrating a major conservation milestone. The Cherish Wisconsin Outdoors Fund has reached $3 million, a fitting achievement announced on National Public Lands Day.

The fund was created in 2013 to provide a permanent source of money for habitat restoration and land stewardship across Wisconsin’s public lands. From state forests and wildlife areas to parks and trails, the fund supports efforts to control invasive species, restore ecosystems, and improve public access.

For every $1 million raised, about $50,000 is distributed annually for conservation projects. Recent grants have restored forest openings in Vilas County, benefiting elk, ruffed grouse, and rare birds like the golden-winged warbler.

Nearly 90% of donations come from hunters and anglers, with the average gift just over $4. Leaders say if every license holder gave just $2, the fund could grow by $3 million each year.

Donations can be made online at the Cherish Wisconsin Outdoors Fund webpage or when renewing licenses on the state’s Go Wild system.
