Dean Richard Stephens

Dean Richard Stephens, age 81, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on February
5, 2025. Born on May 1, 1943, in Glenview, Illinois, to Agnes (Cummings) Stephens, Dean
graduated from Glenbrook North High School, Northbrook, IL, in 1961. He went on to serve in
the U.S. Navy, a time that shaped his lifelong pride in serving his country.
On October 12, 1968, Dean married the love of his life, Janet (Bowman) Stephens, and together
they raised two daughters. Dean had a great appreciation for life, found joy in simple pleasures,
and was passionate about many things, including fishing—particularly for walleye and
crappie—and gardening, which he embraced (if somewhat begrudgingly) as a means to enjoy
fresh ingredients for his beloved BLTs. His love for animals was well-known; he often carried
treats in his pocket for any dogs he encountered. Dean loved to be involved in his daughters’
and granddaughter’s school activities and sports, especially softball and basketball.
Dean spent his career working for GTE/Verizon/CenturyTel, where he dedicated himself from
1978 until his retirement in 2005. He was an active and proud union member of the
Communication Workers of America, serving as a union steward. He lived in Alma Center, WI,
for over 40 years, where his commitment to the community was evident through his role as a
volunteer firefighter and first responder. Dean was also an active and proud member of the
American Legion, ensuring that flags were placed at local cemeteries every Memorial Day and
representing veterans at numerous Veterans Day events and parades.
Dean was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet. He is survived by his daughters, Karla
Stephens-Felt and Tracy Stephens, son-in-law Robert Bush, and his granddaughter, Elnora.
Dean’s legacy of love, kindness, and service will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held in June. Memorial donations in Dean’s honor can be made to
the Clark County Humane Society or the Alma Center Volunteer Fire Department.
Dean’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the many friends, neighbors, and family
members who have supported them during this time.
