Dean Elwood Severson, 88, of Black River Falls passed away Friday, September 23, 2023.
Dean was born August 12, 1935, at the Krohn Clinic and Hospital in Black River Falls to Alvin R. and Hazel
L. (Johnson) Severson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Upper Beaver Creek Church in Taylor, WI.
Dean grew up on a farm in the Rose Hill area. He attended Taylor High School, where he played
basketball and graduated as valedictorian in 1953.
He was united in marriage to his loving wife, Delores (Strande) on September 19, 1959, at the
Trempealeau Valley Lutheran Church. They settled in Black River Falls where they raised their three
children; Dennis (Katherine) Severson of Plymouth, MN; Dena (John) Bahnub of Black River Falls; and the
late Devin (Sue) Severson of Eau Claire.
Dean had a variety of occupations over the years. He was employed at the IGA Foodliner, Krohn Clinic
and Hospital, UPO Norplex Division, the Jackson County Iron Mine, and Buswell Funeral Home. Along
with his wife, they owned Northside Grocery in Black River Falls and Severson Grocery in Hixton, WI,
until retirement.
Dean enjoyed hunting, camping, and getting together with family and friends for a game of cards,
dominoes, or cribbage. He loved to travel. He took many trips; his favorite trips being “up north” and
“out west.” Dean was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. He taught Sunday school,
helped out with Interfaith Caregivers, Project Christmas, and the food pantry.
Dean is survived by his wife of 64 years, Delores; his children Dennis (Katherine) Severson of Plymouth,
MN, and Dena (John) Bahnub of Black River Falls; grandchildren Jarod Severson, Kyle (Monica) Severson,
Chelsea (Adam) Smith, and Chad (Jessica) Bahnub; daughter-in-law Sue Severson; and great-
grandchildren Luka Smith and Maeve Bahnub. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Halvorson and
brother Glen (Patricia) Severson; foster brothers Glen White, Larry Littlegeorge, and foster sisters Gale
White, Cecilia White, and Reta Littlegeorge.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Hazel Severson; son, Devin Severson; an infant
brother; brothers Duane and LaMoine Severson, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Funeral services for Dean will be held Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 11am at the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. Visitation will be held from 10am until the start of
services.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be directed to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Black
River Falls, or the Alzheimer’s Association of Wisconsin.
