The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the 2026–2027 inland trout fishing season will open April 4 and run through October 15.

This year’s season starts about a month earlier than in past years, giving anglers more opportunities to fish Wisconsin’s inland streams, springs and spring ponds at a time when many other fishing seasons are still closed. State officials say trout populations remain strong across much of Wisconsin, and the earlier opener was strongly supported by the public during last year’s Wisconsin Conservation Congress spring hearings.

Anglers who plan to fish for trout will need a 2026–2027 general fishing license along with an inland trout stamp, both valid through March 31, 2027. Licenses can be purchased online through the Go Wild system or at license sales locations around the state.

The DNR also notes there are some changes to daily bag and length limits on certain trout waters to allow for additional harvest where trout populations are abundant.

The earlier trout opener does not apply to inland lakes and ponds, which will follow the traditional first Saturday in May opener—May 2 this year.

As the season begins, anglers are reminded to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species by inspecting gear, removing plants and animals from equipment, draining water from boats and waders, and properly disposing of bait.
