With dangerously cold wind chills expected this weekend, Jackson County Emergency Management has issued some important safety reminders. First, dress in layers to retain body heat, as exposed skin can develop frostbite in just minutes. If you’re traveling, keep extra blankets, fluids, and non-perishable food in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The National Weather Service has updated its terminology: what was once a Wind Chill Advisory is now a Cold Weather Advisory for wind chills of -25 degrees, while a Wind Chill Warning is now called an Extreme Cold Warning for wind chills of -35 degrees or colder. Finally, officials remind you to heat your home only with proper appliances, and plug them directly into a wall outlet—never use extension cords or power strips.
