The Jackson County Forestry and Parks Committee held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday morning at the Jackson County Courthouse. Committee members approved minutes from the December meeting and authorized payment of bills.

Updates were provided by the Wisconsin DNR and the Black River Area Chamber of Commerce. Forestry officials reported strong revenue in 2025, though warm winter conditions have slowed timber cutting. Four contractors are currently working in the county forest.

Parks staff highlighted winter activities, including a winter hiking series at Wazee Lake County Park. Vehicle stickers for 2026 are now on sale, and fish habitat work is planned this winter at Lake Arbutus. Trail updates noted that only east-side trails are open, with west-side snowmobile trails closed due to lack of snow.

The committee approved hiring the Mississippi Valley Regional Planning Commission to develop a new Outdoor Recreation Plan at a cost of $4,500. Members also authorized advertising for a new forestry dozer budgeted at $250,000 and approved the purchase of a new parks skid steer using 2025 fund balance.

The committee approved hiring two seasonal forestry LTEs at $20 an hour and granted a cost-of-living increase for a returning LTE.

After meeting in closed session, the committee approved Jim Zahasky’s performance evaluation. The meeting adjourned at 9:55 a.m. The next meeting is scheduled for February 10.
