La Crosse County is now under state and federal quarantine for spongy moths after trapping data confirmed the invasive insect is established in the area. The moth, which feeds on over 300 types of trees, can cause major damage to forests. It’s the first new county added since 2023, bringing the total to 54 quarantined counties across Wisconsin – including Jackson, Clark, Eau Claire, and Monroe counties. The quarantine affects outdoor businesses and residents, who are urged to inspect items like campers and firewood before traveling—especially to western Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Iowa.
