The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions has announced the winners of this year’s Money Smart Wisconsin Scholarship Contest, awarding 16 high school seniors across the state.
Each student will receive a $1,000 contribution to a college savings account through Edvest 529. The contest, held in partnership with the Wisconsin Coalition on Student Debt, asked students to submit essays outlining how they plan to pay for college or career training.
Officials say the winning essays highlighted strong financial planning skills and a clear understanding of the cost of higher education. Seven of the recipients are first-generation college students.
DFI Secretary-designee Wendy K. Baumann praised the students for their financial awareness and preparation, while DebtSmarts Executive Director Carole Trone said the submissions showed thoughtful and realistic strategies for managing future expenses.
The contest is part of Money Smart Wisconsin Week, running April 6th through the 12th, which promotes financial education and saving for college statewide.
Officials remind families they have until April 15th to contribute to a 529 college savings account and qualify for a state tax deduction.
