National Nutrition Month® is a campaign by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that is celebrated every March. During this month, everyone is invited to learn more about nutrition, healthy lifestyle behaviors, and informed food choices. This year’s theme is “Discover the Power of Nutrition.” It is all about discovering how food and beverage choices can help power your day.
Ways that you can celebrate National Nutrition Month® include choosing healthful foods from all food groups and exercising in ways that work for you. During meals and snacks include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium. As for exercise, there are many ways to be physically active. Some enjoy biking and walking, while others may enjoy participating in group classes or sports. Aim for at least 150 minutes weekly of exercise that increases your heart rate.
Here at the Monroe County Health Department, we celebrate nutrition all year long by providing nutrition education at community events and in schools by educating students about healthy eating. We are also active in the Monroe County Nutrition Coalition. If you are interested in participating in the Nutrition Coalition or have an event you would like the Health Department to present at, please contact us at moco.health@co.monroe.wi.us.
The Monroe County WIC program continues to serve the community daily by providing healthful foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and community resources. If you are interested in applying for WIC, please visit wicmomstrong.com to find out more about eligibility and how to apply for services. We encourage all to apply, even if you think you may not be eligible.
