The 2025 navigation season on the Upper Mississippi River has officially ended with the last tow departing St. Paul, Minnesota. The Motor Vessel Hastings, carrying 12 barges, marked the unofficial close of the season, which typically runs from March through late November or early December.

St. Paul District acting locks and dams chief Mitch Serjogins says it’s a “bittersweet milestone,” noting that winter maintenance is now the focus. Scheduled work at Lock and Dam 7 near La Crescent, Minnesota, and Lock and Dam 9 near Lynxville, Wisconsin, will close locks and dams from St. Paul to Lynxville from December 8 through March 15, 2026.

The St. Paul District maintains 13 locks and dams and a 9-foot navigation channel along the Upper Mississippi River, ensuring safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable transport of commercial goods while supporting national security and the regional economy.
