The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is inviting people to start the new year outdoors with First Day Hikes scheduled at state parks, forests and trails across Wisconsin on New Year’s Day.
From Havenwoods State Forest in Milwaukee County to Pattison State Park in Douglas County, dozens of properties will offer guided and self-guided hikes ranging from one to three miles. Guided hikes are led by naturalists or local experts and are designed for beginners as well as experienced hikers, while self-guided options allow visitors to choose their own pace and difficulty.
Participants are encouraged to dress for winter conditions, as trails may be icy. Some locations will offer warming shelters, bonfires and additional activities such as snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. First Day Hikes are free, though a state park vehicle admission pass or state trail pass may be required.
More than 30 state properties are participating, including Devil’s Lake, Peninsula State Park, Rib Mountain, Whitefish Dunes and Kohler-Andrae. A full list of locations and event details is available on the DNR Events calendar.
