The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into an officer-involved death in Superior.
Authorities say the incident happened Tuesday night when a Superior Police Department officer approached a wanted person on Oakes Avenue. During the encounter, a second individual tried to flee, leading to a physical altercation with the officer.
Officials say the officer discharged their weapon during that struggle, striking the individual. A firearm was also recovered at the scene.
Life-saving efforts were attempted, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was injured, taken to a hospital, and is reported to be in stable condition.
The officer was wearing a body camera and has been placed on paid administrative leave, according to department policy.
The investigation is ongoing, with assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Findings will be turned over to the district attorney once complete.
