Respiratory illness levels are reaching record highs nationwide, across Wisconsin, and locally. In Monroe County alone, twelve residents have been hospitalized with respiratory illnesses since the start of 2026.

Respiratory illnesses like the flu and COVID-19 affect the lungs and airways and spread easily through the air when people breathe, talk, cough, or sneeze. These viruses can also live on surfaces for hours, and even healthy people can become seriously ill.

Health officials say it’s not too late to protect yourself. Everyone six months and older is encouraged to get an annual flu vaccine, which helps prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death. The Monroe County Health Department is offering flu vaccines at no cost. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 608-269-8666.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines are also recommended for everyone six months and older to protect against new variants. Contact your doctor or pharmacist for availability.

In addition to vaccination, remember to wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when you’re sick.
