The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is reminding residents to take radon seriously during National Radon Action Month. Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that can seep into homes through the foundation and is a leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. State Health Officer Paula Tran says even though we can’t see radon, it can still pose a serious health risk, especially for people who smoke, whose risk of lung cancer increases tenfold when exposed.
The EPA estimates radon contributes to about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year. Wisconsin health officials encourage residents to test their homes and talk with family and neighbors about radon awareness. Affordable testing resources are available through the Department of Health Services.
