On May 8, 2023, around 2:48 AM, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of
an unresponsive person at a residence in the Town of Albion. The individual was later
pronounced deceased. During the investigation, the results of a forensic autopsy and related
toxicology results established that the person died as the result of a drug overdose.
In the following months, an investigation led by Detective Smokowicz of the Sheriff’s Office
provided evidence to support that the drugs had been delivered to the victim by Aspen J.
Kalina. Kalina, age 33, of Onalaska, has been arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail
for 1st Degree Reckless Homicide.
This case is still under investigation, and anybody with information is encouraged to contact the
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
At this time, Mr. Kalina retains his presumption of innocence until adjudicated otherwise in a
court of law.
