Today, in Jackson County Circuit Court, the Hon. Lyndsey Brunette presiding, Aspen J. Kalina II, 34, of Onalaska, was sentenced to 7 years of initial confinement and 5 years of extended supervision following a conviction for a delivery of methamphetamine connected to an overdose death at a Jackson County sober living facility in 2023.  Charges of reckless homicide and delivery of fentanyl were read in for the court’s consideration at sentencing, pursuant to plea agreement.

In May 2023, a 40 year old man was found deceased at a sober living facility outside of Black River Falls.  The cause of death was determined to be an accident caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine.  Kalina was identified as a suspect who provided the drugs which led to the death.  Kalina was on a GPS monitoring bracelet for La Crosse County matters at the time of the victim’s death, and GPS placed him at a park across from the sober living facility hours before the victim died.  Witness statements and phone records confirmed that Kalina put drugs, the strength of which he warned the victim about, in a cigarette pack and tossed them into a ditch outside the sober living house for the victim to recover.
