The American Red Cross of Wisconsin Southwest Chapter is teaming up with local fire departments for a life-saving event in La Crosse County.

The “Sound the Alarm” campaign takes place Saturday, April 11th, as part of a nationwide effort to reduce home fire deaths and injuries. Volunteers will provide free smoke alarms and fire safety education to area residents.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at La Crosse Fire Station 4 on Gillette Street, where Red Cross volunteers and firefighters from La Crosse, Onalaska, and Holmen will gather before heading into nearby neighborhoods.

Residents can schedule a free smoke alarm installation and home safety visit by calling 888-376-4056. During these visits, volunteers will install alarms if needed and share important tips on fire prevention, escape planning, and emergency preparedness.

Officials say working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death in a home fire by half, and in some cases, families may have as little as two minutes to escape.

The Red Cross says the program is part of its ongoing Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save thousands of lives nationwide since 2014.

Community members are also encouraged to get involved by volunteering with the Red Cross Disaster Action Team.
