The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports six snowmobile fatalities so far this year and is urging riders to stay sober on the trails.
DNR conservation wardens will emphasize that message during upcoming Sled Safe education and enforcement weekends, scheduled for January 30 through February 1 and February 6 through 8.
Wardens will be patrolling snowmobile trails statewide, sharing safety tips and watching for impaired or unsafe operation. DNR off-highway vehicle administrator Lieutenant Jacob Holsclaw says alcohol remains one of the leading factors in fatal snowmobile crashes and urges riders to wait until they’re home before drinking.
The DNR reminds riders to operate within their abilities, slow down, stay on marked trails, avoid ice-covered waters, and always stop at road crossings. Riders are also encouraged to travel with others and stay alert to changing trail conditions.
More information on snowmobile safety classes, regulations, and registration is available on the DNR’s Snowmobiling webpage.
