The Spring Mass at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church, rural Melrose, will be on Sunday, May 25, at 1:30 p.m. Father Arivu Mariappan, of Guardian Angels Parish, will officiate. The Mass is open to the general public.
Prior to the Mass, a Memorial Service will be conducted at 1:15 p.m. in the cemetery. Veterans buried at the cemetery are: Civil War-James Bulger, Michael Bulger, Michael Crawley, James Dunnigan, and Frank Melvin; WWII-Claire “Junior” McCormick, Eugene McCormick, Gordon McCormick, James Savage, Robert Waller, Wayne G. Hansen, and Jack Gilbert; Korean War-Harold Krosinski, Vietnam-David W. Hansen, and U.S. Army Veteran, Donald Mc Cormick.
On Saturday, May 24, from 10 a.m. until noon, Mary Woods and Sarah Larkin will be on hand to demonstrate the proper way to clean a stone. A collection of photos of numerous stones that have been repaired and cleaned during the past few years will be on display. Also helping with this project have been Bonnie Held and Liz Parker. Stone restoration has been done by Jesse Hansen. Woods will also have on hand her collection of obituaries and burial information for those buried in the cemetery, dating back to the early 1870’s.
St. Malachy’s Church was built in the early 1870’s. It was closed in July 1980. Since a successful restoration project in 1990, a Spring Mass and a Fall Mass of Thanksgiving are held annually.
