The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding the public about its annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend, happening January 17th and 18th, 2026. The event encourages families, friends, and newcomers to experience the fun of winter fishing across the state.

During Free Fishing Weekend, residents and non-residents can fish most state waters without a fishing license, trout stamp, or salmon stamp. All regular fishing regulations, including bag and size limits, remain in effect. Some trout waters are closed, and catch-and-release rules apply where streams are open.

The DNR encourages anglers to review regulations, practice ice safety, and dress for winter conditions. Local fishing clubs are also hosting clinics and workshops, with events listed on the DNR’s online calendar.

Loaner ice fishing gear is available at select locations statewide, and anglers can use the Wisconsin Fish Finder online to locate fishing spots, access points, and regulations.
