The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging snowmobilers and ATV/UTV riders to prioritize safety on the ice, reminding everyone that no ice is 100% safe. So far this year, six fatal off-highway vehicle incidents have been reported, with four involving UTVs breaking through the ice.
As sturgeon spearing and ice fishing ramp up this weekend, the DNR advises caution: UTVs can weigh as much as a car, making ice conditions more precarious. Riders should carry life jackets, avoid alcohol, stick to familiar areas, and monitor local ice reports from fishing outfitters and bait shops. Stay safe out there!
