The Wisconsin Department of Justice is warning families about the growing threat of sextortion, calling it one of the most serious dangers facing children online. Sextortion involves offenders threatening to share explicit images unless victims send money, gift cards, or more sexual content.

The DOJ released a new public service announcement following the passage of 2025 Wisconsin Act 48, which makes sextortion a felony in Wisconsin. The PSA features two Wisconsin families whose children were victims of the crime and highlights the serious mental health impacts sextortion can cause.

Officials urge teens to tell a trusted adult immediately, not comply with demands, and report incidents to law enforcement or CyberTipLine.com. Parents are encouraged to keep open communication with children about online activity and safety.

Anyone in crisis is reminded that the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by calling or texting 988.
