A new analysis from Greenline Insights projects a roughly four-thousand-dollar difference in average household energy costs in Wisconsin between 2027 and 2040, depending on the energy policies pursued by the next governor.
The report compares Democratic candidate David Crowley’s proposal to double funding for the state’s Focus on Energy program with Republican candidate Tom Tiffany’s proposal to eliminate funding and restrict new wind and solar development. Focus on Energy helps households lower energy use through efficiency upgrades and home weatherization.
Greenline Insights estimates the policy differences could add up to more than ten billion dollars in household energy costs statewide through 2040. The report also highlights growing electricity demand from data centers as a concern for future energy affordability.
The analysis was commissioned by Evergreen Action and Wisconsin Conservation Voters. Focus on Energy is funded through utility ratepayers, and expanding the program could increase costs in the short term while aiming to reduce household energy use over time.
