September is National Suicide Prevention Month. It is a time to remember the lives lost to
suicide, those who have struggled with suicidal ideation, and to acknowledge the individuals,
families, and communities that have been impacted. Throughout the month mental health
advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies and community members unite to
promote suicide prevention awareness and share messages of hope.
In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month, the Monroe County Suicide Prevention
Task Force will be hosting our first annual “Be the Light Run/Walk” on Saturday, September 7 th
at 10:00 a.m. at Winnebago Park in Tomah. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness
about suicide prevention and mental health and to let people know they’re not alone by
promoting a sense of community as family, friends, neighbors, and community members
run/walk alongside each other. In 2023 there were six documented suicides in Monroe County.
